there's only XF86_SVGA, XF86_VGA16, AND XFree86 in
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/X11R6/bin/

I've tried these combinations but still didn't work.

It gave an error message:
You must provide a "Screen" section in XF86Config at
least for one of the following graphics drivers:
VGA16, mono

Fatal server error:
No configured graphics devices

Then I checked the XF86Config file. There's already a
Section "Scree" for VGA16 with
Subsection "Display"
      Modes "640*480" "800*600"
      Viewport 0 0
Endsubsection

I then added other subsections for the combinations of
COLOR DEPTH and MOdes that you've proposed but still
nothing

there is no start_ws in neither /tmp nor
/opt/ltsp/i386/tmp

What could I have missed in the installation that
there's no start_ws in /tmp?

One more question I tried to configure nis server on
the server but always got the same message:

gmake[1]: Entering directory "root"
gmake[1]:../Makefile: no such file or directory
gmake[1]: ***No ruele to make target ../Makefile. Stop
gmake[1]: Leaving directory 'root'
make: ***[target] error

I've started all steps over and over using NIS HOWTO
but always the same result. What could go wrong with
the configuration?

Thanks,
Vara
