How did you try them?

Try 640x480 at 2 colors:

    X_MODE_0     = 25.00    640  644  740  776    480  483  485  505
    X_COLOR_DEPTH      = 2

in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf

You seem to confuse XF86Config and lts.conf. The two lines I suggest
above should go in lts.conf.

Yes, at the workstation. That file is dynamically built at boot.

Look again. (runlevel 3, ls /tmp/ at the workstation)
