The following are Desktop/Window Managers:

KDE (executable /usr/bin/startkde)
GNOME (executable /usr/bin/gnome-session)
ICE (executable /usr/bin/icewm)

(note the paths may vary on your system)

These are Display Managers:

KDM [The (K)DE (D)isplay (M)anager ]
GDM [The (G)nome (D)isplay (M)anager ]
XDM [The X (D)isplay (M)anager ]

The display managers responsibility is to give a graphical login box
(among other things). It can manage the logins locally or on remote
displays. Once you successfully log in the Display Manager runs a
Desktop/Window manager that governs the look (GUI) of your X apps. The
Display Manager is independent of the Window Manager. When you type
'startx' you are launching X and one of the window manager executables
(startkde,gnome-session,icewm) without using KDM,GDM,XDM to first log you
in.
