|Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] 486 (33mhz!) with 16 of ram good enough?
|
|Hi all,
|the subject already says it all :).
|Anybody who can save me some time through telling me if a 486 (isa graphics,
|isa 10mbps nic) with 16 and 33mhz is fast enough as node.
|486 - no prob
|16mb - definitely works
|but 33 MHZ - that really seems damn little - anybody any experience with this
|kind of machine?
|

The first time I was experienceing with LTSP I tried it on some 486 SX-25.
The firm I was working for eventually decided they were too slow to be of any
interest.
At home I have a 486 DX2-66 though I don't use it as a thin client: rather,
it's my router/firewall. But when I ssh to it, I get the prompt for the
passphrase after 8-9 seconds, this is the time it takes it to regenerate its
key (well, I don't remeber the procedure ssh follows, but it does do some work
prior to prompting for the passphrase).
I do think 486 are some good for a few things, but be ready to be
disappointed!
