Apologies if I sound uninformed but it's been a while since I 
actually looked at my ltsp configuration.  It's been working a 
little too well lately.  :)


But I do not have a hosts file for my workstations.
I have a DHCP entry for each workstation.
I have a /etc/hosts file that has only two entries:

127.0.0.1      localhost
192.168.1.10   bilbo.home.lan

bilbo.home.lan is my ltsp server and I didn't have to do anything to 
put it there.

Maybe it's been too long since I RTFMed...  But I don't see where 
you have to do that much work for each workstation other than to set 
up the ltsp configuration in the DHCP files.  And that's only once 
for each machine.  Sure, it's hundreds.  Maybe the question is this: 
  Is there some way to provide a default under DHCP regardless of 
the MAC address?  That is to say, if I have a bootp request from a 
machine that isn't a recognized MAC address, then it will provide 
back some kind of default configuration.  Probably not good for 
security though.
