Chris, I don't have access to my RH8.0 system right now, but if you log in as root, you should be able to find the item in the menus that says 'Login settings' or something like that.
That is where you can control the behaviour of the GDM Display manager. One of the settings was what you wanted the login box to look like. I only spent a few seconds looking at that, but as I recall there was options for the login to look like the 'Standard' login, and a setting for a 'Better' display. I don't remember the actual wording. Anyway, you need to find that, and i'm sure you can tweak it to look like the login on the console looked when you first loaded RH8.0.
