Joseph,

I'm new to this so take everything I say with a grain of salt :-)

To configure the way user desktop looks: it depends what window manager
you use, from my understanding, icewm is very popular... download it,
install it, place an executable text file .xsession containing "icewm"
(without quotes of course :) in each users home dir and read the Ice docs
to edit the menus (config files default to somewhere like
/usr/lib/X11/icewm ... not sure off the top of my head).

To configure individual programs: you'll notice that most programs create
hidden files in your home directory, I logged in as a sample user and
configured everything i needed to... I also had to change a few paths in
OpenOffice by manual editing of some xml files, they needed to use
environment variables for username. Will gladly share which files need to
be changed with you if you use open office. Then just write a quick
script to copy the files to each users home dir and set the correct
permissions... I did this and it worked awesome for me! (not the most
efficient for disk space though... I'm sure there is a some way to
centralize the user settings... but if there is I don't know it!) If
you're familiar with configuring user-profiles in winnt, this is somewhat
similar (only way easier if you ask me).

Does this help our should I just shut up and go hide in my hole again? :-)

"Picture the root account as a magic hat that gives you lots of power,
with which you can, by waving your hands, create or destroy entire cities.
Because it is easy to wave your hands in a destructive manner, it is not a
good idea to wear the magic hat when it is not needed, despite the
wonderful feeling. " -- Gnome User's Guide
