I think James is making a mistake here.
I have a dual processor Dell poweredge 2300 on which the mandrake8  X11
doesn't work.
so inittab has the following :

somewhere in the middle :
id:3:initdefault:

this is to start zebigbox in runlevel 3

and at the end of the file :

x:3:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodeamon

This will make X available for the clients, althought the server runs in
runlevel 3.
