That is only interesting for that clients with a
host <whatever name> {
fixed-address 12.13.14.15;
...
}
statement.

Well, AFAIK, it can only tell that clients a hostname that have one
explicitely specified, it does not get them from dns for you (or does
it? for my last try, it did not seem to)

You could install dhcp-v3
Then, for these dynamic clients, you could specify a hostname
inside that subnet statement where "range" is, using the dhcp3
scripting facility, so that a hostname is dynamically created matching
the ip-address.... I have done that before, but it has been a while.
If you need a help on this, I could give in quarter an hour and dig
out the old stuff. But no chance before the weekend, and even then:-/

1./ for some case, X could refuse to run !? That's a rumour for me, I
never saw it myself.
2./ lts.conf: Hostname specifications.
Why don't you try to run one of these "dynamic" hosts in runlevel 3
and tell us what /etc/hosts on that client look like, along with other
files down there... Your fantasy will try you which could be helpful.
