Hi Derek,

It depends on your video card and your monitor.

I am using 1024 x 768 at 24 bit colour without
problem.  My monitor and video cards can support even
higher resolution and color depth.  For a 17" CRT
monitor I consider 1024 x 768 will be fine unless you
are doing graphic editing.
