Etherboot is alive and kicking.  They are still VERY actively
developing bootrom code for lots of nics.  Check out

I don't remember the scripts you are talking about, may be before

The rootpath is controlled by an entry in the dhcpd.conf file
called:   "option root-path"

Doesn't matter if it is pxe or etherboot, the root-path option still
applies.
