This one is easy, my server is always on, and I
always leave a "vncserver" instance running under my
user.

When I am at the office, I simply run "vncviewer
server:1" locally, to view my always-on desktop.

When I am at home, I use putty from

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

to make port forwarding

http://freesco.no-ip.org/VNC/

with vnc

http://www.realvnc.com/

to view the same desktop, quite useful when compiling
big stuff, downloading distribution ISOs among other
things ;)

Of course, the more desktops you leave on 24 hrs a
day, the more resources you will need on the server,
so its not as practical when most users find out about
the feature.

The vnc-X-session is a little non related because
this starts a session upoon connection as I have read,
but it shows the level of flexibility that you may
achieve in linux.
