Thanks to Jim McQuillan and the team I have finally got the Sun Rays to accept ltsp x sessions which I have been grapling with for weeks. Jim, your suggestion to try kdm as a display manager worked excellently. Thanks a lot for your help/ Now it on to authentication between linux and windows active directory!
