Hey guys,

(if you dont want the long version i'll post a short list next)

I have a couple of questions about where to go now. Right now I have
our computer lab running LTSP (k12ltsp 3 to be exact) with about 25
computers. We have one DSL line coming in and that feeds into a linksys
router then into an old (p166) debian box setup as a transparent proxy
using squidguard. Then that goes into a switch and distributes it to
all computers in the school (classrooms, office, LTSP server ...) The
setup is working great so far. My next step is to use the LTSP server
for the whole school so we don't have to purchase windows licesnses for
our so called illegal workstations right now. Each classroom has 2
computers in them. We need one to stay a windows workstation (till we
can run accelerated reader and jumpstart in Linux! any ideas?) and the
other to be an LTSP workstation for web browsing, etc. Also the office
is going to continue using Windows till we can justify replacing a brand
new (closed source :( ) attendance program. All in all though I am
going to have about 40 computers working as LTSP clients. I think my
server can handle it (dual 1ghz; 2 gig ram;dual 10K SCSI 18 gig drives,
1 as /home and other as /; backing all contents up to an 80gig ide
drive), but I want to convert it to gentoo (awesome "package" management
and phenomenal speed) or debian and as a last resort LFS. Anybody
"ltsp'ing" on these distributions? If so what are the results and do you
have any resources on setting these up as terminal servers. I am also
going to be setting up an internal mail server (announcements, memos,
etc.). The only thing is I don't have a static IP and cannot get one.
What are my options? Also I know it can be done but i haven't been able
to find any good resources on mounting home directories in windows. Any
ideas? One more thing. I am about to upgrade all my hubs (10-baseT) to
switches. I am on a very tight budget and would like to have a gigabit
link coming out of my LTSP server connecting to three or four small
switches to server the 40 computers(1 gigabit into 5 maybe 8 port
switches.). Is that the way to go? Any suggestions on brands and where
to buy? Thanks for your help and for bearing with me in this long
message!

Jared
