I have a thin client with this chip in it and noticed something
interesting today ... when booting, a message popped up before
the BIOS hit the screen, saying something about RTL8139.  Seemed
like it was from the RTL8100 chip, inserting the driver into
memory before BIOS was loaded.

Upon bootup, Linux detected an RTL8139 and used that driver.

Give it a try!
