I decided to try to get gdm instead of xdm working with LTSP. Not a good idea. If you have Red Hat 9, that is.
I dropped, into /etc/sysconfig/desktop: DISPLAYMANAGER=GNOME and restored the original /etc/X11/prefdm line to /etc/inittab. Made sure that the Enable=true line is in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf. Rebooted, mostly for laughs. ps ax showed gdm-binary running. netstat -anp | grep 177 showed gdm-binary as having grabbed the expected port. LTSP client machine: XDMCP fatal error: Manager unwilling Host unwilling Hmm.. /etc/hosts is correct, XDM_SERVER is set in lts.conf. Uncommented the line in Xservers to see if gdm would work to log in at the server. Yep, even gdmsetup changes, like 'theme', work. THIS TIME I did RTFM, but- some days you get the bear, some days he gets you. To summarize, on RH9 I: a) had happy indications from netstat b) had Enable=true in gdm.conf c) had XDM_SERVER set in lts.conf d) had a valid entry in /etc/hosts and no remote login via gdm. Local login OK. I put Xservers back, dropped DISPLAYMANAGER=XDM into /etc/sysconfig/desktop, and rebooted. As xdm-config was OK, the LTSP client machine could log in, no sweat. I'm venturing that gdm, LTSP 3.0x, and Red Hat Linux 9 are broken when stirred together. Anybody that has beaten this- give us details! Cheers. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email sponsored by: Free pre-built ASP.NET sites including Data Reports, E-commerce, Portals, and Forums are available now.
