Hey Garry,

I have just today setup several Compaq Deskpro 2000's (Model: 5166MMX) using 3com 3c905/3c905b network cards with boot proms. Initially i was not able to get them to boot from the proms (worked fine with floppies). Etherboot would start but it would hang with 'Probing <3c90x>' and never proceed. For me updating the BIOS on the Deskpro was enough to get Etherboot fully starting. The original bios version was from 1997 and the update was from Dec 10, 1998. It's available here(for 5166MMX, 5200MMX and 5233MMX):

Another important thing to do is disable/disconnect any Hard Drives and disable 'Boot from Removable Disk'. This got them booting like champs. After this you'll run into problems starting XFree86 if they are the same model deskpros as i have. Mine have onboard S3 Trio64V2/GX cards which are not supported by Xfree86 4.1.0 (they are in 3.3.6) that comes with LTSP. I just tossed in ATI RageII cards for now. Hope this helps!

PS. Is Xfree 4.2.x/4.3.0 going to be supported in LTSP in the near future? (to any developers out there)

I have to get 34 Compaq deskpro 2000's to boot from a server. The nics are 8139 based with bootrom sockets. I can boot from floppy without problems but as yet i have problems booting from bootrom. I can't find a way to tell the deskpros to boot from lan using the bootrom i have programmed with the correct image. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

regards
garry
