Hello. Gideon here from Symbio Technologies.
I would like to reiterate what Jim says:
We are NOT associated with DisklessWorkstations.com in any way.
We emailed Jim twice offline in response to his post, but I suppose he
did not receive those messages. I will copy them below.
I was not certain originally if the public listserv was the appropriate
forum to discuss with Jim our intentions, but it appears that this is
where he prefers.
My responses are below. We sincerely would like to help promote the
adoption of LTSP. We would like to work with this group. I hope this
initial confusion doesn't get us off on the wrong footing.
Best regards,
-Gideon

Jim-
Hi. Please don't misunderstand, we do not mean to be stepping on
anyone's toes. We had sent you an email a while back (at the end of
June). Did you receive it? We were looking forward to your response
and never received one. We also spoke to Jeff over at CodeWeavers about
our company and our intentions with respect to promoting LTSP. I will
copy the letter I had sent you below, again. I sincerely apologize if
the first one did not get to you. I believe I emailed a different
account of yours.
In any event, our view is that by promoting the availability of LTSP
hardware, configured and guaranteed to be LTSP-friendly, and by
promoting the LTSP solution, you directly support the LTSP community
because you promote its adoption. With wide-scale adoption comes
cheaper prices, more funding for the efforts of the LTSP contributors,
more manufacturers willing to make hardware that is designed to work
with LTSP, more availability and selection of products, and therefore
more direct support for the efforts of all of those who contribute to
make LTSP a wonderful piece of technology!
We have started to make our livelihood off of the promotion of LTSP,
because we too would like to roll up our sleaves and help the effort the
best way we know how. We want to work together and contribute both on
the technical side and on the promotion and support sides. After all,
that's what open source is all about...
Once our business is off the ground, we would also like to contribute
some financial support when possible. Is there an LTSP fund?
I hope this clarifies things a bit. I want to congratulate you and your
coworkers for all of your continued hard work, and I hope you will
accept us as a few extra hands in making LTSP great!
If you would like, please check out our website at:
http://www.TheSymbiont.com
I would really like to know what you think of all of this. All of us
hear have the utmost respect for you and the project.
Best regards,
-Gideon

********************ORIGINAL LETTER*********************
Dear Jim,
We have spoken many times over IRC, but we have never been formally
introduced. My name is Gideon Romm, and I'd really like to tell you how
much I love the Linux Terminal Server Project. I think it is one of the
most exciting active projects in the open source community. I am the
co-founder of an engineering company in the New York/New Jersey area
called Symbio Technologies. I am an electrical engineer with a
background in integrated circuit design, and my business partner, Roger
Del Russo, is a computer engineer with a background in networking. We
started our company as engineering contractors, working on projects
ranging from cell phone chip development to product development for
several local OEM's. Then, we came across the LTSP.
We were so impressed by the work of the LTSP community, that we started
pushing it as a product in some of the local schools. The positive
feedback that we received, coupled with the sheer fun we have working
with it and the possibilities of contributing to the effort, made us
decide to focus our company around Linux thin-client technology.
To effectively promote our own “out-of-the-box” LTSP solution, as well
as to avoid confusion with the open source effort, we have dubbed our
product “The Symbiont”. Our first Symbiont Server will hopefully debut
soon. It will basically be a pre-configured server all set up with LTSP
and a bunch of applications to get people started.
On July 1st, we will debut our online store, which we hope will grow
into the one-stop-shop for Linux thin-client technology. We will not
sell things like bootroms or EEPROM burners. Our site will be geared
toward end users who just want to buy products and use them. In
particular, we will sell anything that can be useful when putting
together a network based around a Symbiont Server (which is, in effect,
a 100% LTSP compatible server).
We hope that our company will become a useful resource for the LTSP
community, and we hope to be able to have a close relationship with LTSP
and its development. We are considering such programs as: discounts to
LTSP members, monetary aid for development projects, and technical
contributions to the open source effort from our engineers.
We are interested in finding out from you the best and most appropriate
way for us to let the LTSP community know of our intentions and of our
website's premiere on July 1st. We were entertaining the idea of posting
to the listserv, but wanted to check with you first before we did.
Personally, I take offense when random companies post solicitations on
the listserv, and I want to avoid becoming “one of them”. On the other
hand, our intentions are to work with and help serve the LTSP community,
and there is no better way to address them than by posting to the
listserv. What do you think?
We greatly respect and admire everything you've accomplished with this
project, and we value your input. If you have any questions or concerns
about what we are doing, please email me. We hope to contribute as best
we can to the promotion of Linux thin-client technology and the LTSP.
Sincerely,
Gideon Romm
