I actually compiled kernel 2.6.0test2 last night to see if I can contribute to the testing process (so far it is not quite running like I want it yet, but I am making progress) anyway, while I was reading through it, I read the help file for the 8139 drivers, apparently there was an update to that driver very recently to fix a large number of bugs on in the default driver. I don't know if this is of interest to you.
I can further mention, that the standard rtl8139 ETHERBOOT driver only seems to work with actual realtek cards or very close compatibles. A lot of rtl8139 chipset cards use different pci id's most of these have sepperate downloads on rom-o-matic.net - for example the D-Link DFE series cards are standard 8139 chips, using default drivers in Linux, but in etherboot you need specifically the DFE lzrom to make them work. What's more - they (like most realteks) will not work unless you have run rset8139 (which I understand you to have done). A.J.
