I have a method for booting LTSP from hard disk - works excellently in a dual-boot environment, or in a situation where you have a hard disk and do not want to, or cannot, burn EPROMs.
README for lilo-install package Andy Rabagliati <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This page can be found at http://www.wizzy.org.za/article/articlestatic/14/1/2/ . You can find the zip file referenced below at ftp://ftp.wizzy.com/pub/wizzy/lilo-install.zip I have a method for booting LTSP from hard disk - works excellently in a dual-boot environment, or in a situation where you have a hard disk and do not want to, or cannot, burn EPROMs. It works as follows :- I will create (see below) C:\LINUX directory under Windows (or DOS, or blank hard disk). Named LINUX - the better to keep fingers out .. In it I will put :- drwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 0 2003-05-29 11:06:18 linux/ -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 1030147 2003-04-30 16:59:22 linux/vmlinuz -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 67580 2001-01-21 21:22:12 linux/memtest.bin -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 655 2003-05-29 10:42:26 linux/lilo.con -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 23108 2003-04-30 17:05:06 linux/message -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 124422 2003-04-30 17:02:04 linux/initrd -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 512 2003-04-30 17:29:32 linux/boot.dos -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 6128 2001-07-21 17:11:58 linux/boot.b -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 624 2001-07-21 17:11:58 linux/chain.b -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 427692 2001-07-21 17:12:52 linux/lilo -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 9728 2003-05-02 06:42:52 linux/map -rwxr-xr-x andyr/andyr 65536 2003-05-29 08:59:09 linux/rtl8029.bin Which basically consists of the kernel, initrd, a statically linked lilo and its trappings, like boot.b/chain.b, and a lzlilo etherboot image for the card I am using from rom-o-matic.net. A lilo configuration file needs to be created that uses this ethernet card - an install script creates this. I then use toms root/boot ( http://www.toms.net/rb ) and boot from floppy. Take out toms root/boot, insert a floppy that has all the relevant files and an install script. The 'relevant files' are everything in lilo-install.zip - except, possibly, this README, and the memtest.bin file. type "mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /fl" to mount the floppy. The floppy has the linux directory contents as above in a tar.gz file, and some loose lzlilo files in the top level, so you can easily customise it for other cards. You may delete or add any .lzlilo files on this floppy - just make sure the one that supports your card is here. The install script takes two parameters - the card name and the Windows partition (like /dev/hda1) Invoke it as follows :- "/fl/install.sh rtl8139 /dev/hda1" The script mounts the Windows partition on /mnt, unpacks the linux.tgz file (creating the linux directory and contents) copies the lzlilo files into the directory, creates the lilo.con configuration file, and runs lilo. And it is all finished. Now when I boot from the hard drive, I get a lilo menu, with a choice of Windows, memtest86, or LTSP. If you want it always booting to LTSP, uncomment the timeout line.
