As you point out about 2MB for simple 1024x768 should be sufficient. On few i810 motherboard clients with 128MB RAM I have set AGP memory as high as 64 MB but still anything beyond 800x600 and the workstations refuse to run. Monitors are capable and on other clients go even higher that 1024x768.
