I think OpenOffice, upon startup is looking for other windows
that belong to OpenOffice. Somehow, theres an attribute in the window
structure that identifies some information about the program
that owns it.

It sees that there are already windows belonging to OOo, so rather
than starting another instance, it sends a message to the
existing instance and tells it to open your file.

It's a bit suprising that this works across multiple machines,
but I've seen similar things with Mozilla too.
