I've had pretty good luck running M$ Office apps under crossover office.  It 
is more resource efficient than VMware, and performance is quite usable for 
my customer's setup:

Server:
    2x 2.4 GHz Xeon processors
   2 GB RAM

LTSP desktop Users: 14
Other users: 6

There is one caveat: some of the more esoteric features of M$ Office may not 
work correctly. This may annoy users that know of no other applications.
