Have you tried used esdplay <soundfile> on the server?  Kaboodle is a
KDE app, which tries to use the artsd sound daemon by default.  I
renamed my artsd file and created a wrapper script that "wraps" artsd
into esd by calling "esddsp artsd.old".  Sometimes I get some strange
sounds from this, but it mostly works.
