We have a SuSE 9.0 server running LTSP 4.0 with KDE for the workstations just fine. You might want to make a custom XF86Config for the workstation, if you can get Linux running locally it would create a perfect one. How did you enable XDMCP? For us the ltspcfg script didn't work, so we had to follow the HOWTO from www.TLDP.org, with a few file modifications not being needed as SuSE 9.0 seems not to have certain files and some options are already enabled. Also, try setting XSERVER = vesa in lts.conf, that worked for some problems we've encountered with XFree.

So far I have tried 3 different servers using Suse 9.0 without success running
LTSP4.0. There seems to be a problem with KDE being used this way in Suse9.
XDM works fine. The terminals get to the point where the background of the
login screen is there but the login box is not. X then kills itself and
respawns to try again. XDMCP has been enabled. I have gone through the
install procedure automatic and manually many times. Tried different
stations with anywhere from 16 meg to 80 meg of ram. Most are pentiums.
Remote X sessions from a workstation works fine using the command:
X :1 -query terminal.server.name.or.ip. I've googled many of these lines to
not find much. This was the closest I came and tried the suggestions here
(ie. the DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm" thing).
