Do you need all the functionality of OpenOffice? If you just need a word processor that can read and write MS Word files, then you might take a look a textmaker <www.softmaker.de/tm_en.htm>. It's $50 and is very fast (loads in 3 seconds on my machine running locally) on both a local machine and across my ltsp network.
