Performance will of course not be the best on those small boxes - but way 
better than any winblows software before, I'd expect. We started an LTSP lab 
with 18 or so 486-66, 24MB RAM over one 10base coaxial segment which was fine 
once all terminals ran. Later we splitted into two segments because sometimes 
there was too much traffic generated from those machines running windows and 
accessing the Novell file server... this also increased Linux terminal 
reaction time while network was heavily loaded.

If you go for this, use icewm or something similar small for your window 
manager. Editors are there like sand on the beach - even vi when run inside a 
console window :-) For internet browsing: The mozilla version we installed 
was a bit tricky to manage when several users logged in with the same name 
etc., but this is doable. Should be faster then e.g. konqueror as that needs 
all KDE libs and so on.
