Sounds like the terminal itself is locking.  Either
a runaway process or the kernel is locking up.  You
should focus on the software running in the terminal
- instead of the software on the server.

I would try using less swap space - say 8 or 16 MB.
You say your ST320's have 22 MB RAM?  Was that a 
typo?  The only ones I have seen have either 32 MB 
or 64 MB.

I'd be interested in hearing or your solution.
