Yes. We have kiosks that run only a stripped down Mozilla Firebird. The easiest way we found to do this is with icewm and a .xsession script. Here's a sample .xsession from our kiosks:

#!/bin/sh
# This is the $HOME/.xsession file for the kiosk  user.

xset s off &

while true ; do
/usr/bin/icewm &
./run_firebird
done

The mozilla firebird session then runs from run_firebird:

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/MozillaFirebird/MozillaFirebird -P "Default User"

Netscape and the related browsers don't seem to be able to run and take mouse and keyboard input properly without a window manager. Icewem is great because you can strip it down and have little to no user interaction with the desktop. If you want copies of my icewm config files, e-mail me off the list and I'd be happy to provide them.
