LTSP 4.1 will be far more mature than 4.1, and lots of improvements are due in
the stable 4.1. I tended to recommend staying with LTSP 3 unless one needed
local apps or sound (which seem to be easier with 4.0) - 4.0 sometimes lacked
the look of the stable system that LTSP3 offered.
My opinions will change as (I'd expect) many people move over to 4.1, offering
a great knowledge base when it comes to support. That's currently the
problem, experiences on 4.1 are rare yet - but that will change soon, and
then 4.1 will definitively be my version of choice.

Never touch a running system. But why not try 4.1 for a new one (if you're not
going to start virtually tomorrow, but wait for the first week of bugfixes -
remember, 4.1 is a beta version currently)?

Which Xserver to use on the clients doesn't have anything to do with which one
you use on the server. Don't matter about that, LTSP will do the clients'
displays and you yourself may care for the server :-)
