The logins, if I understand correctly, take longer the more of them
there are. As DNS problems tend to result in long pauses with no
activity, I'd expect it to take as long for one session as 40.

So I wouldn't consider DNS a highly likely suspect. I've learned never
to rule anything out (and never, ever, ever say "that's impossible")
when working with computers, though.
