Without knowing what the bottleneck is, I'm not sure that's too useful.
Among other things, I'd be surprised if NFS could match the performance
of local disks under basically any circumstances (assuming similar disks
in the NFS server).

That, I can see making sense. Again, though, without having any data to
help identify the bottleneck, I'm not sure how useful it is.

Ouch. That is a lot of entries, but I'd hope not enough to cause issues.
I'd be inclined to pursue options like LDAP authentication (which is
IHMO nicer anyway) before thinking about dedicated hardware, though.
