Typically a hard power reset is hardware/driver related. If it only happens when PCs are connected, it sounds suspiciously like the NICs. What type are they?
All types possible. The one in the server is on-board (an Asus motherboard). The clients vary from ISA 10MB/s to PCI 100MB/s and everything in between. It is a very heterogeneous network.
I'm not sure how this might influence anything, but the server has only one network interface, a router is connected to a switch to allow internet access. Most setups I've seen include two interfaces.
