And if that doesn't work, try artsdsp (for use with arts, so you need artsd 
running...for esddsp you need esd running BTW). Try both of them with and 
without the -mmap option. If that doesn't work either (I never got Kino, for 
instance, to work with them), you can make an attempt on the ARTS kernel 
drivers:

This is alpha software, I haven't tried it myself because the author says it 
is untested on multiple CPU systems (SMP kernels).

Myself I got tired of the whole thing and cashed out - I bought MuNAS, which 
is a full network sound solution. Easy to install, $20 per client (but the 
first two are free, and also a 30-day trial for any number of clients is 
free).
