I have installed different versions of LTSP on different distributions - my 
experience is that only using .tgz files works best. There are only very few 
files affected outside /opt/ltsp, namely the kernels in /tftpboot, the 
file /etc/lts.conf and the configuration files that might be modified by the 
LTSP setup scripts (NFS exports, DHCP and the like).

Debian + TGZ works fine for me.
