We're using the sourceforge version of the patch. As for working with NFS, I believe that's why we are using samba and smbmount for accessing the workstation resources from the server. I'm using Debian myself, and I really do have an interest in getting it all to build on Deb. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll get some time to play with it.
