With Etherboot, the exact PCI code only matters if you want to burn a ROM or put the code inside your system BIOS. This has to do with the fact that only ROM/BIOS fragments with a valid header (including 55AA and the PCI codes) can be booted by regular PC BIOS (simplified). > I added a CDROM and booted Knoppix, and it told me that it was Class > 8086, and NIC 1229. > > However i then copied the Etherboot rom image to the floppy, and booted > it and it failed to find the DHCP server (suse 9.2), whereas knoppix > picked up an IP address from the server fine. > > Any ideas anyone? Etherboot will only accept DHCP offers that contain a "filename". You should also make sure that a valid and reasonable "root-path" is set, and most people want to set a "router" as well. If Etherboot prints F?F?F? (recent versions only), this is an indication it receives DHCP offers, but without filename supplied.
