ALSA and esd are seperate beasts. ALSA replaces the OSS sound drivers,
so the hardware sound drivers change. This is a kernel decision and
mostly changes stuff in the kernel, though some changes are also
noticeable for users (generally better support for the hardware they
have got, such as surround sound and so on). Well, ALSA also has other
devices in /dev, but it has an OSS emulation layer for /dev/dsp.

I can interpret this in two ways, take your pick according to what you
meant:

Does this mean that your current sound card isn't supported by the OSS
drivers and that you need an ALSA driver? If so you can always install
ALSA in the LTSP driver (ALSA comes for kernel 2.4 as well, and many
people already use LTSP with 2.6...it is just that they need to compile
the kernel themselves, and also they loose NFS swap).

However, if you meant that ALSA would help you to set up sound with LTSP
in general (as in, helping you to get the sound from the server to the
thin-client) then no, it won't do that. The situation will be the same
then as now. It doesn't matter what you run on the thin-client, the
important thing is what you run on the server. (You either need to set
up esd, artsd, nas, or for best results MuNAS, though that is not free).

Branching off into technicalities, please ignore:
What I personally would like to find (or write, if I suddenly get one
extra year of time...) is an ALSA user-space driver (note: this would be
used on the SERVER, and work well with the current LTSP). IE a ALSA
driver that would forward sound to a userspace program with some
information (either $USER or preferably $DISPLAY) so that the program
could use standard NAS and transfer it. Then one could take advantage of
ALSA OSS emulation, software mixing etc.
