could it be they use ActiveX stuff? Otherwise some (sigh) user agent fiddling in e. g. FireFox might do the trick?
Next step I'd try (it's on my agenda anyway) would be to set up Wine and see how that might work. Yes, I know, a bit like tidying up for surgery, then stowing open garbage sacks under the operating table...
