We are using the local device scheme in LTSP 4.1.1, with Gideon's latest
hotplug script. This setup works nicely with USB storage sticks.
However, we have experienced a problem that crops up only when using
files and directories containing characters that are in the
international character sets. The systems we use are almost universially
ISO-8859-1, though some are UTF-8.

It is not possible to write files or directories containing these
characters. Error message sample:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/drives/DiskOnKey_1$ touch .txt
touch: cannot touch .txt: No such file or directory

Files and directories that have been produced when the stick is not
connected to a thin client are not shown at all in listings.

The question is: does the filesystem on the USB disk supports UTF-8 characters in the file/directory names ? And if so, does the 'mount' has the
correct parameters
when is invoked at mount time ? E.g.: for a VFAT volume :
 http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/MountFATFileSystems

you might try the options described on that page.

Thanks, that was a good point, and I have tried it out. Unfortunately it does not quite get me there. One of our special characters is still refused, though this might of course be a bug.

Any more or other ideas?
