Ubuntu is very nice indeed. However, quite a lot of people thought that there's not much software available for it - they thought that whatever in the CD is all there is.
Actually there are quite a lot of software available for Ubuntu, but you'll need to change its repository to point to Ubuntu's servers on Internet.
 
Also, I think Ubuntu has quite a rather short lifecycle too (like FC), this may (or may not) be relevant to you.
 
I am ALWAYS open to new ideas and suggestions and we will see if Debian will fill my needs.
Good for you... computer is only a tool anyway, we should use it as it fits our needs. (and not any other way around)
