I know for sure that SCREEN_01 = shell worked before the upgrade.

If I leave out the "SCREEN_02 = startx" definition from lts.conf I actually 
get the shell prompt.  What I suspect is that the <ctrl><alt><F1> combination 
is not recognized by the nex X server.  Is that possible??
