Assuming that nothing else was flooding the LAN at the time then perhaps his problem is that the CPU/GPU/X server can't keep up with just the drawing requirements of playing a DVD (high resolution, high frame rate). In particular programs line 'xine' perform best when the X server supports the Xv extension.
