Tom,
1) It is perfectly normal for the server and clients to run different kernels.

2) It sounds like you do not have the correct Xaccess entry. Take a look at http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/XDMCP-XDM and see if that helps.

3) After XDM trys a bunch, do you end up with a gray screen or a "host unwilling server unwilling" error?
