Tom,

The LTSP clients are going to use whichever display manager is listening on port 177. And, there can be only 1.

So, see if you can track down whatever is starting wdm, and shut it down. Then, restart xdm and see if it starts listening on 177.

Tom,
1) It is perfectly normal for the server and clients to run different kernels.

2) It sounds like you do not have the correct Xaccess entry. Take a look at http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/XDMCP-XDM and see if that helps.

3) After XDM trys a bunch, do you end up with a gray screen or a "host unwilling server unwilling" error?

  # ps -e | grep "\ .dm"

Finds me some interesting bits.

I have both XDM and WDM runnig at the same time.
WDM is the legacy DM I was running with before I upgraded to X.org.
XDM is what I'm running now.

I suspect that the LtSP clients are pulling in WDM.
But I'm not sure where/how...
