In the past (kernel-2.4 days) one could force scanner detection by
doing something like this:
# insmod scanner.o vendor=0xXXXX product=0xYYYY
where one get XXXX and YYYY from /proc/bus/usb/devices. But this
wouldn't work anymore since kernel 2.6.
Have you ever tried Knoppix? -- And is your scanner detected there?
