No. I've done nothing with character sets because:
1) I don't know anything about them
2) I have no idea if they're needed.
The only strings I deal with are from the lstat() call for directory
entries, and quite frankly, I pass them along as they're gotten. If I'm
supposted to be doing something different, I'm more than happy to fix
it, if someone can point me at an explanation of what code I'm supposed
to be inserting/modifying.
