just to recap

on my system I have

1 boot server, from which all the terminals boot, and from which they get
   a chooser (GDM chooser)

X terminals

Y servers that the users can choose from the chooser mentioned above.
   Under normal circumstances the users cannot use the boot server that
   their 'working server', i.e. the server they login to.

I just tested, it is apparently purely a problem with this KDM. In our 
current production LTSP setup (LTSP 3.x) I cannot get any login window up 
for this particular server. But KDM does at least respond to something, as 
it does show up in the chooser, I just cannot get any login display, just 
a blank gray'ish screen, with an X as the mouse cursor.
