I just received (2 hours) ago the linksys WRT54GL :)  Especially for the 
openwrt distribution ;)

Is it using vlan's or is it possible to have 192.168.[1234].x networks?  BTW: 
Is openwrt able to do port mirroring and/or able to block multicast traffic?

And as the device is put in a school network it will be hard to replace when 
it gets broken, by someone not knowing linux.  Hence I would like to have an 
off the shelf solution.

There is something like freesco (free cisco), which is capable to host 10 
nic's (if the hardware supports so many nics).  As far as I know this 
distribution is not for the WRT54...
