John- I wonder if you loaded the ohci (USB 1.1) driver instead of the ehci (USB 2.0) driver on the terminal if it would operate properly. You can use rmmod to remove the ehci_hcd and uhci_ecd modules from the terminal console (alt-F2), and insmod ohci_hcd to see if that helps.
